“Cowabunga!” A term coined by the one and only infamously super green fighting bad-asses of the late 1980’s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! These were not your average floater in the pond, coming up for a breather red striped turtles, no, these were Foot Clan and Shredder ass kicking mutant ninja turtles transformed from the secret green ooze!
Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird conceived the awesome ninja turtles [Leonardo (blue), Michelangelo (orange), Donatello (purple) and Raphael (red)) in the mid 80’s as a mock comic. But during the process of certain licensing deals, the turtles went from underground mutants to super hero status in a matter of a few years, gaining notoriety like kids getting fake tattoos in elementary. Comics, animated features, action figures, accessories and whatever you can shake a stick at were being gobbled up by kids wanting a piece of these lean, mean and green fighting machines.
The popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the late 80’s eventually lead to the introduction of their first live action film during the birth of the 90’s and they never looked back after that. The live action film easily became one of every little boy’s favorites and went on to give birth to 2 more live action films, “The Secret Of The Ooze” and “Turtles In Time”. Numerous videos games were also released due to its popularity and the turtles have never really gone away. A newer animated TMNT film was released not too long ago and rumor has it that another film is coming in 2012!
As the famous singer Vanilla Ice once sang, “Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go” These Shredder fighting crazy ninja turtles, lead by their master Splinter will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all kids, especially the ones who has experience the true turtle power of the 1980’s. “Shell Shock!” Got any interesting turtle stories you’d like to share?
